Symmetry breaking nonlinearity induced asymmetric coupling of dual waveguide and its applications

Nonlinear couplings in dual waveguide couplers was investigated by numerical computations. Optical Kerr effect in waveguide region caused symmetry breaking in couplings and resulted in an asymmetric coupling coefficient with power dependence in addition to the nonlinear modal dispersion between two guiding regions. All optical signal processing scheme and devices can be implemented based on this asymmetric couplings without complicated optical waveguide circuits. For instance, inverter, optical comparator and power mixer were demonstrated.
