Degenerate four-wave-mixing in the sputter growth Ta2O5 waveguide

Large bandgap materials have been utilized to demonstrate the nonlinear waveguide applications due to the low linear absorption coefficient and two-photon absorption free characteristic. In the present work, the low propagation loss of ~1dB/cm in the Ta2O5 channel waveguide has been demonstrated. By injecting two continues-wave lasers into the Ta2O5 channel waveguide, the degenerate four-wave-mixing is observed. The conversion efficiency of -50dB is realized in the communication region by using the Ta2O5 channel waveguide. Furthermore, the nonlinear refractive index of Ta2O5 has been estimated to be ~1E-14 cm2/W, which is one order of magnitude higher than the SiO2 and Si3N4. The high optical nonlinearity of Ta2O5 is expected to be realized more efficient nonlinear waveguide devices.
