Dark matter search at the LHC: the EFT vs the Higgs portal model

The effective field theory (EFT) approach is commonly adopted for the dark matter search at the LHC. So far there is no signal for dark matter at the LHC. The non-observation of dark matter allows us to set the bound on the effective scale of the operators. We show that the EFT approach may not capture the feature of an actual dark matter model at colliders. We compare the EFT approach with the Higgs portal model in the monojet and t \bar{t} + missing E_T processes. We point out that it is important to respect unitarity and local gauge invariance of the SM in order to compare the bound at colliders with that in the direct detection of dark matter correctly.
