Control Modulation Instability through Periodically-Driving Voltages in Photorefractive Crystals

By introducing a modulation in time, we show theoretically and experimentally that spontaneous optical pattern formation can be controlled by a periodically-driving voltage. Counter-intuitively, in addition to the amplitude, relative phase of the driving voltage in the initial stage is found to play a role on the growth rate of modulation instabilities. Theoretical results on the control of modulation instability in photorefractive crystals give good agreement to experimental measurement.
